At the risk of sparking a semantic debate, I will start this discussion based on the following definitions. The initial definitions are 1) Truth - That which is real, in a deeper sense; spiritual or ‘genuine’ reality and 2) Fact - Something actual as opposed to fiction. I am not comfortable that these definitions are perfect but I believe they will suffice for
creating a distinction that could be helpful. Can you accept the premise that as human beings, with amazing creative abilities, facts are not what ultimately limit us in essence. It is the stories that we make up about facts that ultimately limit us. We have the capacity to review the facts of a situation or limiting belief and create a story around the facts that can be empowering or at least neutral and no longer limiting. The idea of Truth, as I use it here is that there is a Reality which transcends the perception of our physical senses and when we are in alignment with this transcendent Reality, we can witness and express Truth. As Christians, many us believe that God is Good. That is God is not just described as good but at least part of what God is, is Good in Its essence, greater than any given form which might be described as good. If we can accept these ideas enough to act on them, we can create a space for forgiveness that can allow us to redeem our past and create virtually limitless possibilities for the future. The beauty of this, for me, is that we don't even have to believe that the aforementioned is True. We only need to be willing to act as though they are true. In my experience actions consistent with these ideas produce positive results.
What are your thoughts? Perhaps we can come up with pragmatic ideas that can help us reach forgiveness for ourselves and assist others to do so as well. Please leave your comments.
